A committee formed over the summer is beginning to start planning the Park City area’s role in the 2034 Winter Olympics and includes representation from some of the community’s key institutions. The Park City and Summit County governments have seats. Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort an d the tourism industry are some others with spots on the Local Organizing Committee. But others critical to the 2034 Games were not named to the group. The Park City School District and the Park City Fire District are two notable absences from the Local Organizing Committee roster. It is difficult to predict the precise role of either the school district or the Fire District in 2034, but the breadth of the everyday responsibilities are significant. Each district’s boundary covers the Park City limits and the Snyderville Basin, encompassing the community’s Games theater. The Park City school administrators will eventually need to decide whether classes will continue as normal during the Winter Olympics in February 2034. It is among the pre-Games work that must be decided, and could have ramifications well outside the school district’s campus if students are not in class. The district also controls property such as parking lots and the Eccles Center, which will be considered in some manner as the Games plans are prepared. The Fire District will be a crucial emergency services agency as blueprints for first responders at the competition venues, celebration zones and other Games-related locations are prepared. The Fire District is expected to work closely with local law enforcement and outside security agencies present during the Games. Mayor Ryan Dickey and Summit County Council Chair Canice Harte are co-chairs of the Local Organizing Committee. The committee also includes one Park City councilor and one Summit County councilor, as well as the top staffers at the Marsac Building and the County Courthouse — City Manager Adam Lenhard and County Manager Shayne Scott. Dickey said the group was generally based on the Park City-area institutions involved in the bid committee that secured the Games for Salt Lake City. The roster also includes some of the entities that participated in an International Olympic Committee-organized observers program during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. He said Utah 2034, the organizing committee, wants the Park City-area community to craft a plan for the Games. “We’re trying to start with something that is comprehensive but manageable,” Dickey said. “Starting here and then working outward.” He said “yes, absolutely” regarding the school district’s and the Fire District’s eventual involvement. Harte said the Local Organizing Committee is anticipated to add members. He said he would be “happy to have” spots for the school district and the Fire District. “This list is just a starting point. Our expectation is that group will grow,” Harte said. Park City Board of Education President Meredith Reed said the school district is not currently working on issues related to the Games and a timeline for the work is not known. She said the district meets with Park City and Summit County quarterly and described the relationships as good. Reed said the district will engage in the Games talks at the appropriate time. The Park Record couldn’t reach Park City Fire Chief Peter Emery by publication. Park City Mountain, Deer Valley and the Utah Olympic Park are identified as competition venues. The area will also be consequential as the transportation, security and celebration plans are set. The mayor and City Council are scheduled to discuss the Local Organizing Committee on Thursday for one hour. The discussion is slated to start at 3 p.m. at the Marsac Building and will be broadcast on the municipal website, parkcity.gov.
