It's NYC Marathon Sunday! NYPD steps up security for 60,000 runners
Oct 31, 2026
About 60,000 runners will take to the streets across all five boroughs for the New York City Marathon Sunday, with millions of spectators expected and additional New York City police planned along the route.
Police say there are no credible threats to this year’s marathon. The NYPD is deployin
g additional officers, vehicles and thousands of barricades.
Major road closures begin overnight, including the upper level of the Verrazzano Bridge. Officials are urging everyone to use mass transit and expect delays.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reminded spectators to remain alert.
“Cops will be out there to keep you safe, but we ask everyone to stay alert. If you see something, please say something.” Tisch said.
Crews have been inspecting roads and sidewalks. Organizers have also made changes to the course in The Bronx for the first time in 15 years to help reduce disruptions for residents and businesses.
For runners arriving from places including Arizona and Portugal, the race marks the culmination of months of training: 26.2 miles through five boroughs, ending in Central Park.
Madison Liebman is preparing for her first marathon.
“It’s my first ever marathon. I don’t know what to expect, but a lot of feelings.” Liebman said.
For Kenya Flores, the race is about more than crossing the finish line. It is also about setting an example for her daughter, Isabel Flores.
“I think I’m very proud of her and I think she could achieve anything if she believes in herself.” Isabel said.
Marathon runner Bella Polisato said she appreciates the effort participants have put into getting to the race.
“It’s so amazing to see everyone who’s put in all the hard work whether it be in training or in fundraising or both.” Polisato said.
