A random encounter at a Long Island supermarket is giving a couple their dream wedding for free, as the bride-to-be battles breast cancer. Peter Napolitano and his fiancée Elena Volkova say what happened earlier in October at the supermarket near their Port Washington home is still hard to expla in. “It really hasn’t sunk it yet because it’s all happening so quickly,” said Napolitano. A social media influencer named Keegan Gordon stopped the couple at random to offer an act of kindness: Get $500, or give him five minutes to fill their shopping cart with as many things as he could find. The couple took the money, and Gordon asked them their story. Napolitano said he had recently lost his job, and the 42-year-old Volkova, a mother of two, had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer — a battle that has put the couple’s future on hold. “The average survival rate is five years for what I have, and I am coming up on five years in March,” Volkova said. Gordon asked the couple in the video “What if somehow I am going to get you guys married?” Within days, his social media quest to do exactly that reached a group called Wish Upon a Wedding, a nonprofit that organizes weddings for terminally ill people. “This is what we do every day of the week,” said Lacey Wicksall, the nonprofit’s executive director. Wicksall and her team were able to put together a wedding for Napolitano and Volkova in two weeks. The couple will be married on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Top of the Rock — all expenses paid. “We just want to walk into people’s darkness and do something nice for them when they’ve been through so many hard days,” said Wicksall, adding that the generosity of 33 separate vendors made the wedding possible. Unique Jewelers of California delivered a new diamond engagement ring, which Napolitano used to propose a second time. David’s Bridal provided a wedding dress, and Rockefeller Center provided the venue. “They gave me the opportunity to dance with my kids at my own wedding and I am grateful for this experience,” said Volkova, who says the whirlwind of preparations has distracted from her ongoing cancer battle, at least for the moment. The couple said it’s hard to say thanks to all the vendors, the nonprofit — and especially the social media influencer who started it all. ...read more read less
