SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Caltrans is warning motorists planning to cross the Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland on Friday night through Saturday morning to expect “major delays.” Crews will be closing all but one eastbound lane of Interstate 80 to continue work on a bridge painting project.
One eastbound lane of the Bay Bridge will be closed starting at 11 p.m. Friday, officials said in an advisory. At midnight, a second lane will be shut down. The lane reductions move to three lane closures at 1 a.m. Saturday, before four of five total lanes close at 3 a.m. All lanes are scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Saturday.

The lane closures will begin 500 feet east of the Sterling Street on-ramp and extend for 2.2 miles, according to Caltrans.
“Motorists should expect significant traffic impacts when traveling from EB I-80, San Francisco to the East Bay between these hours,” wrote the state transportation agency. Drivers are being advised to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, watch for construction signage and consider alternative routes if possible.
The painting project aims to protect the Bay Bridge’s steel components from corrosion. Caltrans said the project is expected to be completed by spring 2031.
