(KRON) -- A suspected serial killer who grew up in Oakland will stand trial after a San Joaquin County jury found him mentally competent this week. Wesley Brownlee, 47, is accused of "hunting" for victims on the streets of Stockton and Oakland, and murdering six people between 2021–2022. District Attorney Ron Freitas said Brownlee's case can move forward to a murder trial because of the jury's recent verdict. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. "This (competency) verdict confirms what the evidence has shown all along: Wesley Brownlee is competent to stand trial," Freitas said Wednesday. "After years of delay, the victims’ families and this community deserve their day in court. We are ready to proceed and will continue to fight for justice for the victims and the survivor, Natasha LaTour. These were horrific crimes that terrorized our community, and we will not rest until justice is served." When undercover officers arrested Brownlee in 2022, he was driving around Stockton with a gun looking to find another victim, according to police. Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden described Brownlee as a "cold-blooded killer" and “we are sure we stopped another killing." The Stockton victims slain within three months in 2022 were: Paul Yaw, 35; Salvador Debudey, 43; Jonathan Hernandez Rodriguez, 21; Juan Carlos Carranza Cruz, 52; and Lawrence Lopez, 54, according to prosecutors. A sixth victim, 39-year-old Juan Miguel Vasquez Serrano, was gunned down on Harmon Avenue in Oakland on April 10, 2021. When Brownlee was 16, he was living in Oakland when his brother was shot to death on East 16th Street, according to the East Bay Times. Between 1999-2014, Brownlee was arrested several times in Alameda County for drug-related crimes, according to court records. A woman, Natasha LaTour, was shot several times in Stockton on April 16, 2021, fought back, and escaped alive. Investigators said ballistics tests linked all of the shootings back to the same suspect. Earlier this year, District Attorney Freitas announced he is seeking the death penalty. Brownlee is charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He is scheduled to return to court on November 2. ...read more read less
