A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Bronx Thursday morning just steps from where he lived, according to law enforcement officials, and his father said it may have stemmed from bullying at school.
Surveillance video from the Claremont neighborhood showed a teenager running for his life, w
hile another person dressed all in black could be seen running after him. The other person stops and turns around, and shortly after, the victim could be seen collapsing in the distance.
“I see the young boy run past my bedroom window, but I didn’t know he had got shot. And there was another guy on the fire hydrant, and when he heard the gunfire, he ran too,” a witness said.
Officers responded to the scene at East 171st Street and Third Avenue, less than a block from Crotona Park, shortly after 9 a.m. for a report of a person shot. There, they found the teenager conscious with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
The boy, identified as Javits Frimpong, was taken by police to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he later died.
Police were shooting for at least two shooters who were said to have run away. Up to three suspects were seen running from the scene, law enforcement sources say.
While circumstances of the deadly shooting were not immediately clear, Frimpong’s father told NBC New York over the phone that his son kept to himself and had complained to school officials of a classmate who had been bullying him.
“He has been telling the principal, he’s been telling the boy is disturbing him,” said Thomas Frimpong.
The grieving father said his son had moved from Ghana in 2025 to join him in the U.S. Frimpong said it was his son’s principal who broke the news that his son had been shot.
“The school can testify my son is always quiet. Always,” said Frimpong, adding that his son went to school every day.
An investigation was ongoing. It was not known what prompted the shooting or if Javits was the intended target. No arrests have been made.
Gun violence in the neighborhood has been down, according to the neighborhood. Compared to 2025, shootings in 2026 have been down 37% and murders down 44%.
