CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The family of a young woman brutally murdered in Charlotte says more can be done to support victims’ loved ones. Mary Collins’ family says too often victims’ families have to fight for answers and accountability from police and the district attorney’s office.
They are
creating Mary’s Voice, a coalition to stand up for victims’ rights. Investigators say Collins, who lived with developmental delays, was lured to a NoDa apartment, beaten, and stabbed more than 130 times in 2020.
Lavi Pham and James Salerno were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. But Mary Collins’ grandmother says a third suspect, Kelly Lavery, was given a plea deal against the family’s wishes.
Mia Alderman says, “No meaningful answers and no testimony at the any trial. We have never been given an explanation that makes that agree agreement acceptable to us. In our eyes, it was a gift, a gift to a sadistic murder. Mary deserves better.”
Lavery pleaded guilty to second degree murder and could serve up to 32 years in prison. A fourth suspect is scheduled for trial in December.
