LABOR FORCE RECORD: Miami-Dade County had its largest labor force ever in September and neared a record total employment and a record low unemployment rate. The county’s 1.9% September unemployment neared the all-time low 1.8% recorded in November 2023 and its total of employed workers, 1,425,094,
was just 666 persons below the November 2023 record level as well, according to figures that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released last week. The county’s total labor force of 1,452,691 is 338 more people than the prior high, also in November 2023. The figures are listed as preliminary and subject to adjustment.
SUMMIT SAFETY COSTS: Miami-Dade commissioners voted unanimously last week to ask the Florida and federal governments to reimburse local public safety costs associated with the Group of Twenty, or G20, Leaders’ Summit that is to be held at the Trump National Doral Miami resort on Dec. 14 and 15. The call for reimbursement by Commissioner Oliver Gilbert noted that the Sheriff’s Office has estimated it will spend $11.6 million on personnel costs to support the economic policy summit, the first to be held in the United States since 2008. The U.S. Secret Service will have overall charge of security for the summit, but other agencies including the county sheriff’s team, the FBI, Doral Police and more will be involved. The forum has been meeting since 1999.
GAS, DIESEL RISE: An average gallon of gas in Florida on Monday was 1 cent higher than a week earlier, but nearly $1.20 more than motorists paid a year ago. Meanwhile, diesel in Florida was up 8 cents over the week to $6.14, $2.59 more than a year ago. AAA put the average gallon of gas in Florida at $4.09. GasBuddy said the Miami average was $4.15. The average has been wavering between $4.02 and $4.22 since the end of September. Nationally, the average was $4.29 on Monday, $1.23 higher than a year ago. AAA said prices are expected to fall as refineries and fuel stations switch to winter-blend gasoline. But any decrease continues to be offset by high crude oil prices.
GROUP JOINS UHEALTH: Eight doctors from Physicians Group South Florida are joining UHealth on Nov. 2, with five seeing patients at the existing practice at 1801 NE 123rd St. and the other three, all gastroenterologists, moving their practices to the year-old UHealth SoLé Mia Medical Center nearby.
