Family remembers 13-year-old who was fatally shot
INDIANAPOLIS — A family is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old girl shot and killed at an apartment complex on Indianapolis’ northeast side Saturday morning.
Now, her loved ones are remembering the young girl behind the headlines, while cal
ling for answers about who took her life.
To her family, Andrea Eguia was more than a 13-year-old girl who lost her life to gun violence. “She wasn’t judgmental, she wasn’t evil, she was a good girl,” Andrea’s aunt Marina Bontempo said.
She was one of four siblings, a daughter, a niece, and an 8th grader at Belzer Middle School with many dreams still ahead of her.
To those who knew her best, she was affectionately known as “Pooders.”“She was somebody that kept us together. When her mom had bad days, she was her happiness; when her dad had bad days, she was his happiness; she always lifted up everyone around her. We had a message from someone talking about she never made them feel different,” Bontempo said.
But Saturday morning, her family’s world changed. Police found Andrea shot inside an apartment at the Georgetown Apartments on Bunker Hill Drive. She died at the hospital. Her family says she had left home without her mother knowing.
Now, they’re asking people not to judge the decisions of a 13-year-old or her parents who loved her.
“She wasn’t out for vengeance, she wasn’t out for gangs, none of that. Andrea went and thought she was going to kick it with a boy that liked her and that she liked and whatever teenage girls do at this time, and then they were going to make it home in time and…Andrea never made it home,” Bontempo said.
Like many girls her age, Andrea loved making TikTok videos, getting her hair done and experimenting with makeup and lashes. She had a passion for fashion and expressing her own style. And she also loved spending time with her family.
Now as the family prepares to say goodbye, they’re also waiting for answers about who took Andrea’s life, and why.
“You pulled our souls out of our chest. A whole family. She has aunts that loved her, uncles, grandmas, cousins, She was somebody important and you took that from us,” Bontempo said.
For Andrea’s family, nothing can bring her back. As they prepare for her funeral set for Friday in Fort Wayne, her family hopes her memory will live on through the people who knew and loved her.
“We want to hear your stories, We want to see and know, how and what light Andrea brought to your life,” Bontempo said.
As of Tuesday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has not announced any arrests or said what led to the shooting.
