HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The drowning death of 9-year-old King Overton at a SwimRVA summer camp earlier this year has been ruled accidental, according to a final report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
In a Tuesday, Oct. 27 update, Henrico Police said they received the final autops
y report in connection with the death investigation around a week earlier, on Oct. 29.
On the afternoon of Monday, June 15, Overton drowned while attending SwimRVA's summer camp at its North location in Henrico County.
King's mother, LaTaisha Johnson, said it was his first day at the camp and staff knew he was unable to swim. The family's attorney said a bystander pulled him from the pool, not a lifeguard or member of SwimRVA staff.
The family's legal team also said there is evidence that allegedly indicates Overton was underwater for 10 minutes before a 7-year-old noticed him and told an adult.
Police said detectives are continuing to consult with the Chesterfield County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office about the incident.
Overton's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the swim school for over $100 million after months of legal debate and conflict between the Virginia Department of Education and SwimRVA over their lack of licensure and exemption status.
