PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Residents at the Plaza at Bank Street in Old Towne Petersburg are wondering when they will be allowed back into their building. After the city shuttered the apartment building from the public and residents last week due to unsafe conditions, some are considering finding a place to live. Tamala Agee told 8News she may look to live somewhere else after the property managers at Marwaha Investments began relocating her and other tenants to different buildings on Wednesday, Oct. 21. "You had 24 hours to be out," Agee explained. "If you didn't have your stuff packed up that the property management and their crew was going to come in your apartment and pack your belongings up and take it to the new unit." Agee had been living in the building for just six months and enjoyed being able to walk to the local restaurants and bars. On Wednesday, she grabbed her belongings and moved to another unit, unsure if and when she'd return. Prior to Wednesday, a city of Petersburg spokesperson explained to 8News that city compliance officers found structural concerns. After Marwaha missed deadlines to submit a proper engineering report, the city slapped red tags on the apartment complex. This means no one can enter the building except for those making repairs or doing inspections. "I think they should do something for all of us because everybody's in distress, whether it's free rent," Agee said. "I don't know." 8News stopped by a Marwaha leasing office on Monday, Oct. 26, where staff said it arranged for Agee and the tenants in the other nine units to relocate to other buildings. Still, Agee said she's had water pressure issues, air conditioning issues and bugs crawling in the new unit. The management company told 8News it's listening to the concerns and working toward having the Plaza open again. 8News watched on Monday, Oct. 26, as workers went in and out of the Plaza apartments, but they declined to explain what work they were doing. Agee is holding onto hope.  "I hope everybody make it through safely and get something better in life," Agee said. A Marwaha spokesperson said they have to wait for structural report results before they can hope to reopen the building. ...read more read less
