ExNYPD detective due back in court for GWB shooting amid calls for tougher charges
Oct 27, 2026
The retired NYPD detective accused of gunning down another driver on the George Washington Bridge is expected back in court, as he remains free on a $1 million bail.
Koran Irvine’s family is expected to rally outside of the courthouse on Tuesday afternoon to pressure prosecutors to upgrade char
ges against the father of two’s alleged killer, retired cop Victor Romero. The prosecution charged him with voluntary manslaughter, not murder as initially charged by the police.
On Friday, court documents revealed that Romero posted bail and was no longer in police custody. News 4 reached out to Romero’s attorney for comment.
Irvine, 46, was shot and killed on the bridge last week in an apparent case of road rage. His family spoke outside of last week’s court hearing in Manhattan.
“I speak to my brother every day,” Zeria Irvine said. “He guides me every day. We lost a father!”
“To go home that same night and have dinner, that same night my brother was not able to have dinner with his children or his wife… You are not even an ounce of what my brother is,” she added.
Nicholas Liakas, one of the lawyers representing the Irvine family, shared the following statement:
“It is deeply troubling that Victor Romero, a retired NYPD detective, was initially charged with murder, only to have that charge downgraded to manslaughter—and has now been able to post bail. It is clear that he received preferential treatment because of his former position in law enforcement. Koran Irvine’s family deserves a full and transparent explanation. We will continue to stand with them and fight for accountability and justice.”
How did the events occur? Who is the victim?
Irvine, an employee of the electric company Con Ed and a resident of Valley Cottage (Rockland County) with his wife and two children, died Tuesday night. According to police sources, an armed individual fired a shot that struck the rear window of the victim’s car after an incident in which the vehicles nearly collided on a bridge access ramp.
The bullet struck Irvine in the shoulder, passed through his body, and exited through his neck. Irvine was pronounced dead at a New Jersey hospital.
Con Ed reported that Irvine was not on duty at the time of the shooting. A spokesperson issued a statement expressing condolences for this “senseless act of violence.”
Neighbors also described Irvine as a helpful person.
Irvine lived in Valley Cottage with his wife and two children. Neighbors shared what it was like to live near the 46-year-old and his family.
“We moved into the neighborhood; I remember when we first arrived, he was helping us out. They had chickens in the back,” said neighbor Hope Dorceoly. “He brought us chicken eggs to welcome us. He was a really kind person; we’re in shock and devastated for the family.”
