Aerialists from the Salem Aerial Dance Company provided an opening show before the circus began. Inside the tent, the stage became the world of “The Cricket the Wren.” The story follows a merchant’s daughter who must break the spell of a frog prince. Her journey takes her through a world of sassy cows, dragons and a down-on-his-luck pirate. The production blended acrobatics with theatrical storytelling. Characters moved between acts and gave the evening the feel of a traveling stage show as much as a traditional circus. Behind the scenes, the production depended on a team working beyond the spotlight. Cast and crew members handled everything from raising the tent and selling concessions to cleaning up after the show. (Laura Tesler/For Salem Reporter) The appeal of an old-fashioned circus lies partly in its ability to bring together spectacle and human skill in an intimate setting. Unlike performances viewed on a screen, a live circus unfolds just feet away, allowing the audience to see the concentration, physical effort and timing behind each act. As the Flynn Creek Circus entertained Salem audiences, Riverfront Park became a gathering place for an enduring art form that continues to combine athleticism, storytelling and the simple pleasure of watching performers do what seems almost impossible.
