“Ghosts are bad, but the one who’s cursed / Is the Headless Horseman, he’s the worst!” — so goes the catchy lyric from the Disney cartoon classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. This iconic specter is haunting the streets of Annapolis this fall, bringing Halloween thrills and chills to local audiences. The Colonial Players of Annapolis presents a playful rendition of Washington Irving’s storied tale. This stage adaptation by John Heimbuch and Jon Ferguson unforgettably blends humor, suspense, and spooky entertainment. Rather than presenting Irving’s masterpiece as a straightforward ghost story, the production combines comedy with supernatural elements. Alex Brady‘s skillful direction gives the play a unique take on the Halloween classic, which has had countless film and literary incarnations over the past 200 years. The plot centers on Ichabod Crane, an eccentric educator who moves from Connecticut to Sleepy Hollow, New York, to take a position as the town’s schoolteacher. Upon arrival in the village, Ichabod quickly becomes enamored with the flirtatious heiress, Katrina Van Tassel. As her beauty and wealth capture his attention, Ichabod soon finds himself at odds with Brom Bones, a popular local figure who is also vying for Katrina’s affection. Their unexpected rivalry leads to a series of humorous confrontations as Ichabod attempts to navigate unfamiliar customs and personalities. Meanwhile, the mysterious Headless Horseman looms over the unfolding rivalry. Along the way, the Horseman becomes an increasingly ominous presence in Ichabod’s life. As Ichabod’s romantic ambitions collide with supernatural forces, his fate hangs in the balance. Nicholas Martinez brings a scholarly and conceited air to Ichabod Crane, delivering his lines with enthusiasm. He colorfully conveys disdain for the town’s uneducated residents and frustration with authority when reprimanding misbehaving students. As Brom Bones, Jack DuPree personifies the character with swagger and bravado. His interactions with Martinez are especially entertaining, particularly when expressing disgust at Ichabod’s antics and the duo’s shared affection for Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina is capably portrayed by Nerrie Navarro, who sharply communicates displeasure at Brom’s romantic advances. She thoroughly embodies Katrina’s no-nonsense disposition, expressing skepticism toward tall tales. Navarro also exudes confidence as an a cappella soloist in the show’s finale, highlighting her musical talent. In a mesmerizing characterization of the Headless Horseman, Steve Campbell brings this frightening figure to life with imposing movements and gestures. He smoothly maneuvers a cumbersome puppet and costume with ease. Nicholas Martinez (Ichabod Crane) in ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.’ Publicity photo by Brandon Bentley. From the moment that the audience enters the lobby, the macabre, cobweb-infused decor and suspenseful pre-show music immediately set the mood for the play. Scott Nichols’ set design further enhances the creepy atmosphere with an eerie woodland aesthetic. Dudley Whitney’s lighting and special effects design complement the ambiance, displaying dim illuminations and a burning fireplace. The Headless Horseman’s presence is heightened by Richard Atha-Nicholls’ sound design, with the clopping of horse hooves traveling throughout the theater. This ingenious effect cleverly simulates a horse riding through the audience. Outfitting the cast in elaborate 1800s fashions, Alysia D.P. Malmström’s costumes feature tri-cornered hats paired with ornate jackets, as well as intricate dresses. Amy Atha-Nicholls fabricated brilliantly designed horse puppets, and these creations vividly illustrated these animals. Having visited Sleepy Hollow with my family in 2018 and taken the town’s legendary cemetery tour, I was charmed by this production, which brought back fond memories of that unforgettable trip.
