Christina Ricci shares why she rarely celebrated Halloween and what changed
Oct 24, 2026
Christina Ricci’s favorite holiday is Christmas.
It’s an unexpected answer from the actor, whose credits include Halloween classics “The Addams Family,” “Casper” and “Sleepy Hollow.”
“I don’t look at things from the outside. So for me, I’ve been a part of like three movie
s that are supernaturally themed and some of them have been held up to be very iconic,” Ricci, 46, tells TODAY.com, adding that she knows people associate her with the spooky season. “But my favorite holiday is Christmas.”
As a kid, she says, she would often be working on Halloween so she didn’t do much trick-or-treating. “I did a little bit, and certainly when I was really small I would go with my family,” Ricci adds.
The “Yellowjackets” star, however, says she’s grown to appreciate the holiday and the “enthusiasm with which people attack Halloween.”
“I love when people go really big. I love when people have the giant spiders coming over the garage or the huge animatronic skeletons,” she says.
She recently started to get even more into the Halloween spirit thanks to her children; 12 year-old son Freddie and 4-year-old daughter Cleopatra.
“Halloween has been a thing ever since I had my own kids,” she says. “So now I do Halloween because of my kids and I’ve really learned to appreciate it.”
This year, she especially leaned into the holiday when she teamed up with “Hocus Pocus” icon Kathy Najimy, as well as creators Rachel Iwanyszyn, Zaire Alford and Macy Blackwell, to create a council and decide the winner of Reese’s Trick-or-Treatiest Street in America. East Dudley Avenue in Westfield, New Jersey, was crowned the champion.
Ricci says it was nice to celebrate creativity, individuality and community, sharing how it was wonderful to see “neighborhoods and people coming together.”
Ricci — whose “favorite candy of all time is Reese’s Pieces” — will also partake in her own festivities with her neighbors. She adds that this year is extra special because her daughter will experience a Halloween first.
“This year will be the first year that my 4 year old, she’s almost five, will probably do a little bit of street trick-or-treating,” she says. “And that should be fun.”
She shares that she’ll take her kids around their neighborhood before one of the families hosts a big chili cookout at night after the trick-or-treating is over.
While she notes that she does not dress up for Halloween, her children already have their costumes picked out.
“But I will say when I was a child, I’m the youngest of four kids, my mom had this gorilla costume that all the kids wore,” she says. “And then I was able to wear it for like four years in a row, so I would just always be a gorilla in costume.”
One year, she was a gorilla ballerina and another time she was a gorilla teenager, she says. “That is the only recurring costume that I have in my past.”
