Google Rejects Trump’s Bid to Slap His Name on an Ocean—Then He Fumbles Basic Geography in Rant
Oct 23, 2026
President Donald Trump stunningly floats an idea to rename the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, but he embarrassingly stumbles over basic geography while crowing about it at a campaign rally.
During the rally in South Carolina Wednesday, Trump told the crowd that he asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai wha
t he thought about renaming the Atlantic to either “Trump Ocean” or “American Ocean.”
Trump nonsensically told his MAGA supporters, “I only like two oceans, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I’m not going to put either Trump or America on any other ocean but these two.”

“So, we seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean, and I called Google Maps, who were really great with the lake and really great,” he said as the crowd chuckled around him.
He went on to say he asked Google CEO Sundar Pichai to rename the Atlantic Ocean to the “Trump Ocean” or “American Ocean.”

“You know they’re still rattled from the Gulf,” Trump snickered, referring to his renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” by executive order shortly after retaking office in early 2025.
Trump explained how Pichai rejected the idea of renaming the Atlantic
“He said, ‘Oceans are different, sir; they cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that,” Trump continued, chuckling.
“So, I’ll probably pass. Should I pass? I think let’s keep it the Atlantic Ocean,” the president of the United States inanely sputtered.
But he wasn’t done, and that’s where he seemed to confuse the Atlantic with the Pacific.
“Pacific Ocean, we were going to call it the American Ocean,” Trump laughed. “How do you think Europe would feel? Do you think they’d like that? … Europe would be thrilled, right? Ursula would call, ‘Oh, thank you very much,’” Trump mimicked, blathering on as the crowd barely responded to his bizarre musings.
He’s referring to the current President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. It’s doubtful it matters at all to von der Leyen because Europe is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, not the Pacific.
Social media erupted, pointing out Trump’s confusion and wondering whether something more is at play here.
“Dementia is real. Somehow Trump didn’t get the memo, and Republican @$$ kissers refuse to alert him. The booty suckers complain yet sit, watch, laugh, but do nothing,” a X commenter stated.
This poster summed it up in two words: “He’s nuts.” Others chimed in. “He’d have no idea if you gave him a globe.” Another put it this way, “He’s declining week by week in front of our eyes.”
Critics contend it’s a shame a president would obsess over renaming longstanding geographical locations, given all the world’s problems, including a war of his own making and a growing affordability crisis among Americans.
But this isn’t the first time Trump and his lackeys have bungled basic geography.
In August, when he first proposed renaming Lake Ontario to get back at Canada over the failed trade negotiations, he showed a map of the Great Lakes in the Oval Office.
It was riddled with embarrassing errors. The most eye-popping blunder put Washington, D.C., in eastern North Carolina, south of Virginia Beach. It also marked the capital with an unrecognizable building.
The botched map, apparently made of Legos, also showed Delaware as Maryland and labeled New Jersey as Delaware. Connecticut sat below Trump’s hometown of New York. The map even had New York landlocked instead of showing its shorelines.
Trump and his cronies have gotten a big kick out of watching the outrage over his weird geographic rebranding efforts.
Shortly after retaking office in 2025, Trump tried to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, also by executive order, but that went nowhere internationally or with the wider public.
The name change only affects federal agencies and documents.
In some cases, though, he’s succeeded in renaming places after himself.
West Palm Beach, where Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is located, did change the name of its airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport over the summer.
Last year, the State Department renamed the U.S. Institute of Peace the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
But Trump’s other efforts at renaming well-known public spaces after himself, such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, New York’s Penn Station, and Dulles International Airport, have failed so far.
