Pumpkin composting returns in Summit County
Oct 23, 2026
Park City and Summit County organizations are partnering to collect fall pumpkins so they don’t end up in the landfill.
Park City Community Foundation, Park City School District, Summit County, Park City Chamber and Momentum Recycling are inviting the community to drop pumpkins at the followi
ng locations from Oct. 31 to Nov. 13:
Jeremy Ranch Elementary School
Parley’s Park Elementary School
Trailside Elementary School
McPolin Elementary School
Ecker Hill Middle School
Park City High School
Park City Day School
Little Miners Montessori School
Park City Library
Park City Visitor Information Center
Park City Heights Clubhouse
Recycle Utah
Summit County Library — Kamas Valley Branch
The organizations asked people to remove all paint, glitter, and other decorations from pumpkins before dropping.
Park City MARC is once again hosting its Pumpkin Smash from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. Leftover pumpkins will be composted.
Last fall, the community composted 20,720 pounds of pumpkins, bringing the total to nearly 90,000 pounds since 2023.
The Park City Community Foundation’s Zero Food Waste initiative, which aims to keep food waste out of the landfill, funds the pumpkin composting. With food waste taking up nearly half of the space in the Summit County landfill, every pound composted saves money, cuts methane emissions, and brings the Zero Food Waste initiative closer to its goal of keeping all food waste out of Summit County’s landfill by 2030.
Local businesses can help, too. Through the Zero Food Waste Business Incentive, offered by Park City Community Foundation with support from Summit County, restaurants, caterers, and other food-related businesses in Park City and Summit County can receive up to nine months of free food waste pickup through Momentum Recycling. The program covers the startup fee, collection bins, and on-site staff training, valued up to $3,000. Spots are limited.
