Parents should check their bathroom cabinets after millions of tubes of toothpaste were recalled this week, including several brands marketed toward kids. More than half of the 4 million tubes subject to the recall are flavored pastes from the brand Brush Buddies that feature popular kids charact ers and toys like Barbie, Hot Wheels, My Little Pony and Crayola, according to an enforcement report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall also includes two Evo brand products marketed for teeth whitening and sensitivity, and two Aru brand toothpastes for cavity protection and gum health. The recall is categorized as “CGMP Deviations,” meaning the manufacturer didn’t follow all of the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements when making the product. The regulations govern how products are manufactured, processed and packed to ensure they are safe to use and that “it has the ingredients and strength it claims to have.” The FDA did not list what specific deviations sparked the recall. Asked for more information, the agency directed questions on those details to the company. Pritam International Private Limited, an India-based company, first initiated the recall on Sept. 10 and it was classified as a Class II recall on Monday by the FDA. A Class II recall is the FDA’s second-most severe alert level and is defined as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” The products were distributed nationwide by Ashtel Studios Inc. based in Ontario, California.
