On Nov. 3, Summit County voters will choose a county clerk, and I urge you to vote for Malena Stevens. The clerk’s job isn’t glamorous, and it shouldn’t be. The clerk runs our elections, maintains our official records, and applies state election law that keeps changing. What matters most i s competence, transparency and the trust of voters across the political spectrum. Malena Stevens has the experience to deliver all three. She is already doing the job. The Summit County Council unanimously appointed her interim clerk in April, so we can judge her by her record, not just her promises. Before that, she served four years on the County Council, including as chair, and two terms on the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission. She chaired the Districting Commission that redrew council boundaries into five districts, and she spent nearly a decade on staff at Park City Municipal. She understands county government from the inside, and this office has no learning curve to spare. Malena says election integrity “isn’t about politics — it’s about procedure,” and she acts on it, keeping her campaign separate from her duties administering elections. She wants every eligible voter to have intuitive access to the ballot and clear, plain-language information about how the process works. Outgoing Clerk Eve Furse, a former federal magistrate judge who oversaw the office through a recount, has endorsed her. Why does this matter? Summit County residents hold strong political views, but we all share an interest in elections that are accurate, secure and open to public understanding. When people understand how their votes are counted, they trust the result, win or lose. A clerk’s greatest asset is credibility, and credibility comes from consistency, clear communication, and a record of following the law. Malena has made that her priority. Please research the candidates carefully, as Malena herself encourages, and I believe you will join me in choosing the person who has already shown she can do this job well.
