Having served on the Oakley City Council during Zane Woolstenhulme’s four-year tenure as mayor, I’m proud to endorse him as he seeks election to the Utah House District 4. His lifetime of public service (20 years on the Planning Commission and four years as mayor) and 40–year career in public finance and education administration uniquely qualify him for office.  Although he is a deeply religious man, he doesn’t believe religion should be taught in schools from the third grade onward (as a bill passed by his opponent requires). Neither does the Utah Education Association, which endorses Zane. Religion in schools too easily crosses from education to indoctrination, which is why our forefathers emphasized the separation of church and state. As a planning commissioner, he successfully worked with Mountain Lands Community Housing Trust to build affordable housing and strongly believes in local control of housing and zoning. Unlike his opponent, he will fight to preserve the people’s ability to pass initiatives by a simple majority — not the 60% his opponent supports. I can think of no initiatives, other than basic administrative ones, that would pass at a 60% threshold. The initiative process is critical because it is the citizen’s way of keeping a sometimes-extreme Legislature accountable to us. Both candidates are quality public servants, but policy and experience matter. That is why I’m supporting Zane.
