Miami Dade College is looking to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its business programs following a meeting with faculty, university leaders and industry representatives on how the technology is changing education and the workforce. Pamela Fuertes Berti, dean of MDC’s School of Bus iness, organized the meeting, which included representatives from Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University and the business community. “We launched this initiative because we recognize that artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed how companies operate, how companies make decisions, how companies develop talent, and we know that we have an important responsibility to ensure that our students are best positioned to continue to lead,” Ms. Fuertes Berti said. The college is examining how to incorporate AI into business disciplines including accounting, finance, marketing, supply chain management, entrepreneurship and hospitality. Ms. Fuertes Berti said the effort is intended to bring faculty and employers together to determine what students need to know as businesses increasingly adopt AI. “This is a faculty-led, industry-informed transformation,” she said. The initiative builds on work already underway at MDC, including faculty projects supported through the college president’s innovation fund. The college has also launched a bachelor’s degree in applied artificial intelligence. “We want to scale in a way that helps us achieve a coordinated, measurable initiative,” Ms. Fuertes Berti said. The college is examining how jobs are evolving and what employers increasingly expect from graduates as it works to coordinate the effort across its business disciplines. “What we know is that employers are saying, not only is it important to be fluent in AI but being able to exercise sound judgment, strategic thinking, strategic planning, critical thinking, creativity, communication,” she said. Ms. Fuertes Berti said the college is taking a human-centered approach to AI, with an emphasis on maintaining academic integrity and incorporating input from employers. The effort is also intended to support MDC’s role in preparing students for employment in Miami-Dade County as businesses increasingly adopt the technology. “It’s collaborative, it’s thoughtful and it’s grounded in ensuring that we prepare our students and help them be successful,” Ms. Fuertes Berti said. “And so for us,” she continued, “the question is no longer about whether artificial intelligence will change or has changed; it already has. The question is how quickly and how thoughtfully can we prepare our students to lead in this new environment.” The post Miami Dade College, universities unite to build AI into business programs appeared first on Miami Today. ...read more read less
