The defending 4A state champion Miners girls cross country team is rounding into form again at the perfect time in their season.  Park City won the 4A Region 10 championship on Oct. 6 at The Cottonwood Complex in Millcreek with a team time of 1:37:56.1, less than a second ahead of Highland in s econd place.  The regional championships are good for bragging rights ahead of the divisional and state championship meets. The Miners were competing against Highland and six other teams.  Park City junior Brooke Greenberg claimed the individual title with a time of 18:04.2. She crossed the finish line about 27 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Highland. Greenberg’s teammates Rhys Weidenhamer, Piper Petrole, Phoebe Zaniello and Sydney Sato finished in third, sixth, 10th and 11th place, respectively.  “It was super close on the girls side,” said Miners Head Coach Steve Cuttitta. “Every runner was going to make a difference. And in the initial results, Highland actually won. … Later that night, I was sent a video by our assistant principal, who was at the finish line, and I was looking at the finish between sixth and seventh between our girl Piper Petrole and their runner, and it was super close and I couldn’t tell (who finished first).” So the next day, he reached out to the timer. “(I) said, ‘Hey, I didn’t see this at the meet, but that looks really close,’ and he went back to the video, reviewed it and it turns out Piper actually did beat out the girl from Highland for that spot. That actually flipped the points.”  Cuttitta said the team had the rare opportunity to celebrate their big win a few days after the race.  Park City’s boys team finished in fourth place at regionals, but Cuttitta said they ran some of their best times of the season. Senior Sam LaBrin finished in third place individually with a time of 15:54.9, less than 10 seconds behind the champion from Jordan’s time. The boys team finished in 14th place at state last season, but Cuttitta believes they can crack the top-10 this year.  “The boys actually ran really well,” Cuttitta said. “So we’re hopeful for them going onto divisionals and state that we can improve on last year.” The Miners competed in divisionals at Lakeside Park in Orem on Wednesday, where they fought to be part of the state championships. The top 11 teams from each of the two boys and girls sectionals races advanced to state on Oct. 28 at Sugar House Park. The girls team finished in third place and the boys team 11th at divisionals, both advancing to state.  “We’re not trying to run our fastest race of the season,” Cuttitta said ahead of divisionals. “But we do know we have to get through. … We can work on some strategy and tactics that we can apply in a couple weeks. So we’re going to try out maybe a couple new things.” Cuttitta is glad his teams got experience the last few weeks racing against many of the same teams they’ll compete against at state. He thinks it should give them confidence that they can beat some if not all of them again then. Park City will go for runs every day leading up to the state championships to prepare, as they have been doing all season long.  “Two, 3 or 4 miles for us is the equivalent of almost a day off,” Cuttitta said. “(The) distance is the same and we’ll see the same teams. But Sugar House is definitely its own beast with the hills.” The post Miners girls cross country team wins regional championship on Oct. 6 appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
