Indiana approves $19.1 million for local road funding
Oct 20, 2026
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana counties, cities and towns will receive $19.1 million in local road funding after the State Board of Finance approved the fourth reimbursement tied to Gov. Mike Braun’s gas tax holiday.
The approval covers Aug. 1-31. The state will reimburse $102,990,086 to the Mo
tor Vehicle Highway Fund, the Local Road and Street Fund, and the Local Road and Bridge Matching Fund. Local governments will receive $19,129,920.
The board also approved the annual transfer of the first $70 million in gasoline excise tax collections to the State Highway Road Construction and Improvement Fund. The transfer, based on July fuel-tax revenue, typically appears as an adjustment in August distributions. The gas tax holiday delayed the revenue, so the adjustment is appearing later this year.
The transfer does not reduce the reimbursement owed to local governments. However, October’s distributions will include the one-time adjustment, causing a temporary dip in Motor Vehicle Highway and Local Road and Street fund amounts. The adjustment occurs annually; the holiday shifted its timing.
The State Comptroller’s Office is processing payments. Counties, cities and towns should receive them within two to three business days, according to the announcement.
Braun said the holiday offers relief at the pump while preserving funding for roads and bridges. State Comptroller Elise Nieshalla said completing the transfer now will prevent the statutory adjustment from being applied twice next year.
