Cleanup was underway on Staten Island Sunday evening after a massive fire tore through a vacant warehouse at the Mount Loretto campus operated by Catholic Charities, leaving heavy damage and a roof collapse. (Image: NBC New York via Citizen App) More than 200 firefighters and EMS personnel res ponded to the South Shore campus in the Pleasant Plains neighborhood after the warehouse went up in flames Saturday evening, officials said. The cause of the fire remained under investigation. “There’s heavy, heavy damage to the structure. The roof did collapse,” New York City Fire Dept. Chief of Operations Kevin Woods said. Authorities said the warehouse had been vacant for at least five years. The fire was initially reported at the church on campus, but arriving crews found the old warehouse behind the church engulfed in flames. “Upon arrival, we had heavy fire throughout the building. We immediately went to a defensive operation. We set up multiple large caliber streams, tower ladders, and hand lines,” Woods said. A firefighter and a civilian suffered minor injuries. The Mount Loretto campus, run by Catholic Charities, offers a wide range of community programs. “This campus holds 36 structures, including two schools, a senior center, and others,” Woods told reporters.
