Throughout history, ordinary people have shaped the world for better or worse. Some are remembered for celebrated achievements and heroic deeds, while countless others have made equally important contributions without recognition. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jo hn F Kennedy, Martin Lutther King Jr., to mention a few — each has helped sustain democracy as a way of life in America. Their enduring influence remains central to preserving the freedoms we enjoy today. However, past leaders faced formidable obstacles in carrying out their heroic deeds. At times, the risks seemed insurmountable, yet through exceptional qualities, they overcame these challenges for the betterment of humanity. One person who has largely remained under the radar, but who I believe helped save American democracy and deserves to be counted among these heroes. The saying “the pen is mightier than the sword” has rarely been more fitting. It describes this person’s modus operandi. The January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was in President Roosevelt’s words, “a day which will live in infamy.” Although it did not lead to war, it marked a defining moment when American democracy faced a severe test. Had this individual yielded to presidential pressure, history would have unfolded very differently. We remember President Trump urging his supporters to march to the Capitol and protest Congress’s certification of the Electoral College votes from each state. Members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, along with many other rioters, stormed the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the proceedings. Despite their attack, Republican Vice President Mike Pense reconvened Congress to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election even after facing intense criticism from the president for doing so. Amid widespread media coverage of special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment of President Trump for allegedly attempting to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power, former Vice President Mike Pence has become the forgotten man in this saga. In my view, his steadfast faith and commitment to the Constitution helped preserve our democracy and prevent its descent into tyranny. His legacy deserves recognition, and his name should stand among the notable leaders of our time. You, too, can follow Mike Pence’s example and help protect democracy by exercising your right to vote in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
