Sheriff needs to resign
Oct 17, 2026
Wasatch County residents deserve a clear decision about Sheriff Rigby’s continued leadership and a public explanation of how their interests are being protected.
I am calling on Sheriff Rigby to voluntarily step away from active duties while his criminal case proceeds. He has pleaded not guilt
y and is entitled to the presumption of innocence and a fair trial.
County officials also have a responsibility to protect employees, witnesses, public records, and the integrity of law enforcement operations.
Utah Code requires the county legislative body to place a county officer on paidadministrative leave when a felony charge arises from conduct related to that officer’s official duties. Whether that condition applies here requires a determination based on the relevant facts.
The council should publicly explain its determination and legal basis, consistent with court orders and legally protected information. If the statute applies, follow the law.
The county should also put its safeguards in writing: who oversees daily operations, who preserves relevant records, and what independent protections exist against retaliation.
I am drafting legislation for consideration during the 2027 session to address this issue. It is too serious to leave communities facing uncertainty about who can act, when action is required, and how the public is protected.
My goal is a clear, lawful process, with timely decisions, independent safeguards, and continuity of essential services. That process must protect constitutional rights and give residents a way to hold officials accountable.
Our deputies deserve dependable leadership. Employees and witnesses deserve protection. Residents deserve answers they can understand and decisions they can scrutinize.
The badge carries public authority. That authority comes with public accountability.
