Students who live outside the Park City School District boundaries will be able to apply to go to classes there in the 2027-28 school year. The Park City Board of Education decided Tuesday to continue open enrollment. The application period begins Nov. 15 and continues until the first Friday in February. No one is approved before then. Business Administrator Randy Upton has said enrollment is declining, but the drop hasn’t made a noticeable difference in funding so far. The state requires school districts to track enrollment numbers, which influences how much funding they receive. District administrators opened the doors of its six schools for the 2026-27 academic year after a trend of declining enrollment. Officials at the time said they hoped it would bring stability and even out the effects of broader population changes in the area. At a previous board meeting, Upton said open enrollment “changed the trajectory” of the district and is expected to help keep the student population stable. Superintendent Lyndsay Huntsman in late August said preliminary enrollment reports showed 87 fewer students than the previous year, for an estimated total of 4,177 students from preschool through 12th grade. The district received 365 open enrollment applications for the current school year, and approved 197. Of those, 20 declined. Park City High School offers a lot of electives, which keeps class sizes smaller. When there’s a funding change, the district tries to cut “outdated” programs instead of eliminating teacher positions, according to Upton. Board members will be discussing class sizes and available space at their November meeting.
