Department of Forestry encourages Virginians to stay aware amid fall fire season

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -- Fall fire season has begun in Virginia and the Department of Forestry (DOF) is encouraging Virginians to be cautious and stay fire-aware.
The Virginia DOF and other fire agencies in the region recognize fire seasons in both the spring and fall, which runs from Oct. 15
through Nov. 30, according to a Thursday, Oct. 15 release.
Wildfires are more common during these seasons due to dry conditions, lower humidity and fuels on the ground, DOF officials said. In Virginia, careless outdoor burning is the leading cause of wildfires.
"An unattended yard debris fire or bonfire can quickly spread to dry grass, leaves, limbs, felled trees or even the woods," the release said. "These dry materials, known as 'fuels,' are plentiful in the fall."
Ongoing drought conditions in many areas of Virginia may also be a factor in this season's fire activity.
“It only takes a few days of dry, windy conditions combined with these extra fuels on the ground for an escaped fire to turn into a significant wildfire,” said John Miller, Chief of Fire and Emergency Response in the release.
According to the release, DOF firefighters are coordinating with local, state and federal emergency responders throughout fall fire season.
“Wildfires are extremely unpredictable and can start and intensify in an instant,” said state forester Terry Lasher. “Protect your home and community by preparing for wildfires and reporting any wildfire activity by calling 911."
The state's Department of Forestry will share updates on wildfire activity throughout the season on social media and its website.
