Teen faces charges for shooting at LIRR station. The two victims were arrested, too

A 19-year-old is facing attempted murder charges after an early morning shooting at a Long Island Rail Road train station — which ultimately resulted in the two victims being arrested as well.
Jahmez Cureton, of Wyandanch, was getting off of a train at the Bellport station around 2:30 a.m. Frid
ay with three other friends, according to police. They were walking on the exit ramp when Cureton turned around and fired a gun at a 17-year-old boy who was also leaving the train, police said.
“The round continued through that male and entered a second male, a 40-year-old male directly hitting him in the right shoulder,” said MTA Police Chief Thomas Taffe. “That male was getting onto the train with a bicycle.”
Chief Taffe said that man, Abdul Willet, of Bellport, stayed on the train until the next stop at Mastic-Shirley, where he was given medical attention and sent to the hospital.
Willet was treated and released, but MTA police realized Willet had an open warrant for having stolen a bicycle, though it was not the one he was riding that night. He was arrested shortly thereafter.
“The 17-year-old was the intended target of the shooting,” said Taffe. “He fled the scene that night and was located by the Suffolk County police on October 13 and taken into custody on an unrelated warrant. He was found to have an untreated bullet wound to his shoulder.”
All three — the alleged teenage shooter, the teen victim and the other man shot — were arrested and being processed at Suffolk County District Court. MTA police credited their extensive camera network and their partnership with Suffolk police in solving the case, which appears to have stemmed from a dispute over a girl.
While news of a shooting was unsettling to commuters, the MTA said crime on the railroad is very low, with zero recorded crimes at the Bellport station in all of 2025. This shooting was the first recorded crime of 2026 at the station.
