CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A woman is dead and two officers were placed on leave after a shooting in Chesterfield Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, Chesterfield County Police Department officers were called to the 10800 block of Woodpecker Road at about 6:46 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a report of a woman in her 70s in crisis who had walked away from their home and was reportedly armed with a weapon. A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, gave their account of the deadly officer-involved shooting in Chesterfield. They live near Woodpecker Road and said they got a call about several police cars in front of their home. “I was sitting on the front porch, it's probably like 9, 9:15 a.m. And you heard multiple people screaming, 'Get down!' and you heard like 5 or 6 gunshots,” they said. “I freaked out and went to the end of the driveway to see what was going on. Then a bunch of undercover police officers were down there with vests on and everything.” WATCH: Law enforcement hold press conference about officer-involved shooting During a press conference, Chesterfield Police Col. Frank Carpenter and Scott Vantrease, chief of public safety and law enforcement for the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, said shortly after 9 a.m., during the search, the woman came out from the wood line armed with a handgun, and shots were fired. The woman was shot, and officers immediately rendered aid. Despite those efforts, the woman died at the scene. “I was very worried and shaken up this morning because that stuff doesn't typically happen around here,” the anonymous neighbor said. Carpenter said two officers were involved in the shooting, but it is unclear if one or both fired shots and how many. Both officers were placed on leave. It is unclear if the woman who died experienced a mental health crisis. The circumstances surrounding the shots fired are still under investigation. ...read more read less
