‘It’s a culture that we gotta reverse’: City leaders, police warn against fights, illegal activity at youth sports park

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Petersburg parents are being warned to behave appropriately at youth sporting events or face the consequences after city leaders said a fight broke out at Albert Jones Field.
Chief of Police Travis Christian released a statement that said children deserve better from their
parents than arguments, intoxication and threats in the stands. Councilman Marlow Jones said it has been an ongoing issue at the park.
Jones said a video circulated on social media of a fight between adults at a recent youth sporting event there. He said it ended with at least one person taken away in handcuffs.
"It wasn't the kids, but it might as well have been," Jones said. "Because they saw it, they witnessed it. And whether it was on the inside of this gate, on the outside of this gate, it was at this park."
‘Our children are watching us’: Police condemn unruly, disruptive behavior at Petersburg youth events
Christian said in a statement on social media that the police department was aware of "unruly, disruptive and disorderly behavior" at Albert Jones Field. He said fighting, threats, disorderly conduct, weapons violations and the illegal possession or use of drugs and alcohol will not be tolerated.
Jones said this is an ongoing problem at the park.
"It's a culture that we gotta reverse," Jones said.
Christian's statement continued, "We cannot demand respect, discipline, and good sportsmanship from our young people while failing to demonstrate those same qualities ourselves."
"I want them to be thinking about the kids' safety," Jones said about adults that visit the field. "I want them to be thinking about their own behavior. I want the morning when they wake up to come to this field, I want them to consciously say, I'm going to be on my best behavior."
Jones said he wants to revisit legislation he drafted for council a few years ago that would be tougher on crime in front of kids at the park.
"We've got to be mindful [that] our kids are watching," Jones said. "What they see they can't unsee. So this program needs to be revamped, needs to be looked at. A lot of people are not going to like it, I already know that. But what else can we do if y'all can't act like you're civilized?"
Christian said that if illegal activity takes place, the police department will take action and people should expect to be held accountable.
