RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With just over three weeks until Election Day in this year’s midterms, Randolph-Macon Political Science Professor Rich Meagher says it looks like a blue wave in favor of Democrats is materializing in Virginia.  “Americans in general have become disillusioned with Presid ent Trump,” Meagher told 8News.  In September, Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted three Virginia U.S. House races that Democrats are hoping to flip leftward.  The race between incumbent Republican Congressman Rob Wittman and Democratic Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor in Virginia's 1st Congressional District is now considered a “toss-up” race.  In the 2nd Congressional District, the race between incumbent Republican Congresswoman Jen Kiggans and former Democratic Congresswoman Elaine Luria is now rated as “leans Democratic.” Meanwhile, in the 5th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Congressman John McGuire is being challenged by former Democratic Congressman Tom Perriello, which Sabato’s Crystal Ball rates as “leans Republican.” “Doesn't mean they're gonna win all of these races, but just as these races go, so does the national race for control of the House, so does it relate to the Senate races and control for the Senate,” said Meagher. “It’s just not been good news nationally, and that makes it really hard here in Virginia for Republicans to try to do anything about it.”  In Virginia’s U.S. Senate race, Meagher says incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Warner remains the “heavy favorite” in his race against his Republican challenger, retired Army Major General Bert Mizusawa.   Plus, Meagher says he expects Virginia's three proposed constitutional amendments to pass as well.  “Most Americans tend to support reproductive rights, they tend to support marriage equality, and they tend to support more access to voting rights, and here in Virginia, that’s definitely the case,” said Meagher.  Early voting continues through Oct. 31. Election Day is on Nov. 3. ...read more read less
