A man was killed and another has been hospitalized, police said Sunday, after gunfire erupted in a crowd as thousands of students and visitors gathered following homecoming events at Delaware State University. According to police, the shooting happened at about 9:19 p.m. on Saturday in the Dover Commons shopping center parking lot located in the 1200 Block of North DuPont Highway where crowds had gathered following homecoming events. Officials said, before the shooting occurred, officers were in the area as crowds of “thousands of students and visitors attending Delaware State University’s homecoming events” gathered at nearby shopping centers and other areas when attendees were told to leave campus at approximately 6 p.m. Following the end of homecoming events, officials said, officers attempting to control crowds in a nearby parking lot heard several gunshots and observed people running from the Dover Commons shopping center parking lot. Following the shooting, officials said, first responders located a 21-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body and, while rendering aid, they discovered a second victim, a 22-year-old man, who had also been shot. Both men were taken to a nearby hospital where, officials said, the 22-year-old man — identified Sunday as Nasir Cox, 22, of Philadelphia — died of his injuries. The injured 21-year-old man, officials said, was listed in stable condition as of Sunday morning. Officials said, at the time of the shooting, “more than 50 officers from the Dover, New Castle County, Wilmington, Smyrna, and Camden police departments, along with Delaware State Police, were already working in the area to manage crowds and respond to large disturbances that included multiple fights, calls for disorderly behavior, and for shots fired at multiple locations.” This investigation, police said, is ongoing. Police in Delaware are asking anyone with information, photographs or videos from the area around the time of the shooting to contact the Dover Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit at 302-736-7111. Tips may also be submitted through Delaware Crime Stoppers or the Dover Police Department’s online contact form. NBC10 is working to learn more.
