OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- The Oakland Roots have played their last game at the Oakland Coliseum. The Roots temporarily moved to the Coliseum in 2025, but the soccer club announced this season would be its last one at the venue. The team said the space wasn't a good fit for a soccer team, citing ope rational costs and a lack of venue control. Saturday night, Oakland sports fans said goodbye to another team, something many of them know all too well. "We've had plenty of last games before,” said Roots and Oakland sports fan Maurice Greer. “I've been here with the Raiders, I've been here with the A's, the Warriors. It’s just another game." Greer would know. He’s spent many days at the arena. "I was a 15-year season ticket holder in Black Hole, Section 105, Row 27,” Greer said. When the Roots took up residence at the Coliseum, he came back for the matches and joined some of the Roots supporter groups. They marched on the field before the game. "It was great to kick up the dirt on my Hokas one last time, all of that,” Greer said. President of the nonprofit Oakland Forever Alphonso Guevara was also out on the field. He's been an Oakland sports fan since 1995. "Saying goodbye to the Coliseum because we had a lot of memories there,” Guevara said, thinking back. “Good memories." He plans to continue supporting the Roots, who expect to play their home games at the former Raiders practice facility in Alameda. Guevara thinks the team has a bright future. "When one door closes, another door opens,” Guevara said. "Their fan base is growing. I know they're small, but they're growing in a positive way." ...read more read less
