UPDATE: Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner is expected to speak more about the suspected gunman during a press conference at the scene of the shooting on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3:45 p.m. You can watch it live in the video embedded on top of this article or the NBC10 Philadelphia streaming c
hannel.
A gunman shot and killed a police officer and injured another in West Philadelphia overnight, officials said.
During a press conference late Saturday morning, Commissioner Kevin Bethel identified the slain officer as 40-year-old Shane Seiber.
“He fought valiantly but he lost his life today,” Commissioner Bethel said. “Fortunately, his wife was able to be by his side before he passed, as well as his family and we’re grateful for that.”
Seiber was a 19th District officer, 10-year veteran of the police department, husband and father to a 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, according to Bethel.
“Today, police officer Shane Seiber paid the ultimate price while sacrificing his own life to protect and serve our city,” Mayor Cherelle Parker said during the press conference. “Because of his noble, and courageous and valiant choice to serve, a 40-year-old servant leader of our Philadelphia village is gone too soon. A wife is now without her husband. Two babies are without their father.”
Parker later released a statement on Officer Seiber’s death.
A procession was held for the slain officer following the press conference.
Police said they first received a report of a man with a gun on a porch on the 100 block of North 52nd Street at 12:22 a.m. on Saturday. Officer Seiber and a 33-year-old officer responded to the location around 12:50 a.m. when a gunman opened fire, according to investigators.
Seiber was shot three times while the 33-year-old officer was shot 12 times, officials said.
Both officers were taken to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where they underwent surgery. While Seiber died from his injuries, the second officer is currently in stable condition.
A SWAT team and more police officers later responded to the shooting where they found the gunman in a tree, officials said. The man opened fire on two more officers before police took him into custody though those officers were not hurt, according to investigators.
Police said the man was in possession of a shotgun and two handguns, including one weapon that belonged to one of the officers he shot. Officials have not yet revealed his identity.
During the first press conference early Saturday morning, Bethel said the 33-year-old officer who was wounded has five children. Mayor Parker said she spoke with the families of both officers.
“Their families right now are feeling unspeakable pain but watching this department and those families sticking close together as a village has definitely showed me what the indomitable power of the human spirit is and can mean during times like this,” Parker said.
Before learning of Seiber’s death, Parker and Bethel both asked the public to pray for the officers.
“I believe in the power of prayer,” Parker said. “And if you are asking me what we can be doing right now, what we should be doing right now, for these officers, from our department, our Philadelphia police department, and their families, the most powerful thing we can be doing right now is to pray.”
Gov. Josh Shapiro also released a statement on the shooting.
Lori and I are praying for the two Philadelphia police officers shot in the line of duty early this morning. Our hearts are with their families and their fellow officers in the @PhillyPolice.
Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect their fellow Pennsylvanians. We are grateful for their courage and service, and we are all hoping for their full and speedy recovery.— Governor Josh Shapiro (@GovernorShapiro) October 10, 2026
