Something amazing has happened in Congress. Mike Lee reached across the aisle, in good faith, and made a genuine compromise with his Democratic colleagues. The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act was introduced last week in Congress by Lee, along with Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), and Martin Heinrich (D-NM). If it passes, the benefits of this bill will be impossible to ignore. Major renewable energy projects have been held up by a thicket of outdated rules and regulations. This bill would clear that mess while still maintaining clear rules to protect our air and water. It would unlock huge sources of U.S. energy, especially clean geothermal energy produced right here in Utah. It would cut costs for all major projects, from power lines to train lines, to dams to protect our water supply. The four senators that introduced this bill span the political spectrum. And yet Sen. Lee was able to get them all on board for a bipartisan bill to deregulate and unleash American energy supply. I have to admit, I’m surprised. Lee hasn’t always shown himself open to working with his Democratic colleagues. But being chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources seems to have had a maturing effect on him. They’ve been working on this for over a year. Somehow they got it done. We could all use some hope that prices will stop rising. Bravo to Sen. Lee for delivering.
