Hing Hay Park machete attack: A 44-year-old man allegedly attacked two men with a machete in the Chinatown–International District’s Hing Hay Park on Tuesday. One man sustained a cut to his head, the other to his back. The suspect is in jail.
Weapons detectors coming to two Seattle schools: T
his week, the Seattle Public Schools board voted unanimously to bring a weapons detector pilot program to both Rainier Beach High School and Nathan Hale High School. The schools requested the pilot program. The detectors will be those open-pillar types that you see at Mariners games. They’ll be installed and running in the next few months.
ICYMI: The Seattle City Attorney announced a new community court and a new punitive measure to request higher sentences for repeat low-level offenders. The King County Department of Public Defenders has qualms with details about the new court and the regressive new guidelines.
Good news for freaks (non-derogatory): Capitol Hill is getting a new furry store called Furesh.Shop. The operators are a hyena and a wolf. They have Jimothy merch. I will leave you to decide whether this is good or cursed.
Nobody won the Millionaires Tax debate: Last night, during an hour-long debate, former US Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler suckled at the teat of big millionaire and president of the Washington State Labor Council April Sims did her best to defend progressive taxation. Herrera Beutler warned that the tax, which will levy a 9.9 percent tax on all household revenue over $1 million, is a slippery slope that means YOU will get income taxed next. She also claimed all the rich people are packing up their Aston Martins and moving out of state. Sims fact-checked these erroneous fear-mongering claims. We will decide this shit at the polls.
The weather: Do you remember the days when there was light in the morning? It is so dark now. It should remain gloomy and even—gasp—wet throughout the day. Wetter than it’s been, at least. But it’ll be a light rain. I am afraid of this temperate fall.
Hurricane Isaias heads to the mainland: The storm has been upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane and will hit the Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. It’s the first hurricane to hit the mainland US in two years, and it’s the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026.
Moose stuck in skate park: A bull moose got stuck in the half-pipe at Montana’s Hellroaring Skate Park. He couldn’t climb the cement walls to get out. It took multiple agencies and multiple hours to free the moose from the skate park.
Nobel Peace Prize awarded to human rights lawyer: The South African human rights lawyer and international judge, Navi Pillay, who led the United Nations commission that found Israel had committed genocide against the Palestinian people, won the prize for her work “ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.” In case you did not know, this prize is much more significant than the FIFA Peace Prize.
What country is this again? Defense Secretary and testosterone lover Pete Hegseth announced the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan would be public. The Pentagon later clarified that that means it will be livestreamed. The UN says this would amount to torture.
“If you don’t like public executions just don’t watch it” says the crowd trying to ban drag shows and books— Laura Bassett (@lebassett.bsky.social) 2026-10-09T01:59:17.959Z
ICE shot a man in a car in New York next to a five-year-old child. ICE fired seven shots. The man was hit in the neck and transported to a nearby hospital. Once he was stable, ICE whisked him away and detained him. New York politicians, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, demanded the abolishment of ICE. According to a WIRED report, one of the ICE officials on the scene has a history of alleged violence and illegal arrests. He reportedly used a taser on a handcuffed man, and activists allege he tackled a pregnant woman during ICE’s Minneapolis operation.
Is that 21 birds in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? That is probably what TSA agents asked the two different men who arrived from Cuba at the Miami airport on different days, both with multiple birds smuggled in their pants. One man carried 10 birds (two blue grosbeaks, eight yellow-faced grassquits); the other carried 11 (six Cuban melodious finches, five Cuban bullfinches). Both men checked “no” on the customs forms asking if they were bringing animals or wildlife into the country.
Horrifying: Arizona Congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia was raped while she was fixing her campaign signs at 2 a.m. An attacker approached her from behind, smashed something over her head, and she woke up with him on top of her and pulling his penis out of her, the Phoenix New Times reports. She felt confused, guilty, and shameful immediately after and in the days that followed. She weighed whether to report it, let alone go public about her attack, wishing instead to bury it and pretend it never happened. But she did. “I need to let women know that it’s okay to talk about it,” she said. She does not fix her campaign signs at night anymore.
Sorry to leave you with that: Here is nice fall music to make up for it (I know I have shared this before, but I am not sorry). You can see the band behind this soundtrack at the Showbox SoDo on October 20!
