The sewer people are back. 5 seen climbing out of street hole on Upper East Side
Oct 09, 2026
Authorities are investigating after five people were seen emerging from a sewer on the Upper East Side early Friday.
Police say the quintuplet was spotted exiting the hole on East 82nd Street between York and East End avenues just after 2 a.m. They drove off in a black Suburban, traveling east on
82nd Street.
Investigators say they recovered tools at the scene, but they didn’t elaborate.
It’s the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent months. Just a few weeks ago, two men seen crawling out of a manhole near East 61st Street while the United Nations General Assembly was underway were arrested on criminal trespassing charges, police said.
Authorities don’t believe the so-called “drain diving” is tied to anything nefarious. The NYPD says it has gotten multiple reports about people entering the sewer system after a storm to look for valuables and scrap metal.
The department says it has had “a robust response to these incidents” and continues to respond as appropriate.
