3 San Francisco police officers face brutality complaints over 2025 arrest
Oct 08, 2026
The San Francisco Public Defender’s Office is filing police brutality complaints against three officers in response to what the office called a violent arrest last year.
The public defender’s office said the arrest of Kevon Gibson resulted in him needing to spend multiple days in the intensiv
e care unit to recover.
Gibson’s arrest happened on Aug. 17, 2025, after police were called to an SRO hotel on Sixth Street. On Thursday, the public defender’s office shared police body camera video of portions of a conversation with a complaining resident at the hotel.
“The complainant had threatened Mr. Gibson that morning and then called the police claiming that Gibson had flashed a gun at him,” said Jessie Seyfer, a spokesperson for the public defender’s office. “What he described was actually a torch lighter that Mr. Gibson had in his pocket.”
According to the public defender’s office, the three officers then tried to find Gibson at his girlfriend’s apartment in the building. They eventually found him and confronted him in a nearby elevator.
In hallway security camera video footage, officers could be seen striking Gibson repeatedly as they wrestled with him on the ground.
Gibson’s attorneys said he had to spend days in the intensive care unit after the arrest.
The public defender’s office said it’s filing a complaint with San Francisco’s Department of Police Accountability and also plans to file a complaint with state authorities to possibly yank the certifications of the officers based on the video footage.
“That shows their state of mind, that they were there to taunt, to target, to harass, basically, our client,” said Angela Chan with the public defender’s office.
The case has already circulated through the criminal court system. In August, a jury convicted Gibson of three counts of misdemeanor resisting arrest and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In the hallway security camera video footage, an officer could be seen pulling a gun from Gibson as he was on the ground.
Following Gibson’s conviction in August, the district attorney’s office praised the officers for their work.
The district attorney’s office issued a statement refuting the accusations and standing by the arrest, saying the suspect was tried and convicted.
Neither the police department nor the police union provided any comment.
