Florida woman charged in $330K fraud case targeting Hanover business’ bank account
Oct 08, 2026
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 41-year-old Florida woman is facing felony charges in "an elaborate computer fraud scheme" that left a Hanover County business out $330,000.
On Aug. 7, 2025, the Hanover County Sheriff's Office received a report of bank fraud involving a local business that had fall
en victim to a sophisticated financial scheme.
An investigation showed malware compromised the business' computer in July 2025. The following month, someone posing as a bank representative contacted an employee and claimed that several fraudulent transactions had been detected on the company's account.
Authorities said the suspect deceived the employee into providing multiple two-factor authentication security codes, which were later used to authorize several fraudulent wire transfers. Investigators determined that the suspect already possessed the business' banking credentials, including account login information and passwords.
The victim had never knowingly provided that information, according to deputies.
The fraudulent transactions initially totaled about $856,000, but the financial institution was able to recover a substantial portion of the money, reducing the business' loss to about $330,000.
Investigators traced one of the transfers to 41-year-old Melissa Cuffe of Davie, Fla., who they said implicated herself in criminal activity.
She was extradited from Florida to Hanover County on Thursday, Sept. 17. She is currently being held at the Pamunkey Regional Jail and has been charged with conspiracy to receive stolen goods and receiving stolen goods.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, in Hanover General District Court.
"This case is a testament to the dedication, persistence, and outstanding investigative work of the men and women of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Gregory W. Six in a statement. "These criminals deliberately targeted a local business and stole an extraordinary amount of money. Our investigators spent more than a year investigating, tracking financial transactions, and working with our law enforcement partners to bring one of those responsible back to Hanover to face justice. I want to make it very clear that just because someone lives outside of our jurisdiction, or even our state, does not mean they are beyond our reach. We will continue pursuing those who prey upon our citizens and businesses, no matter how long it takes."
Cuffe's arrest comes after a 24-year-old Wisconsin man was arrested after nearly $50,000 was stolen from a Hanover resident — also through computer fraud.
If you or anyone you know has been a victim of computer fraud, you are asked to contact the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at 804-365-6140 or the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
