They played 184 games together over 10 years, including three Super Bowls, two championships and 16 total playoff games. Jake Elliott and Lane Johnson were the last two members of the Eagles who won two Super Bowls, and even though they played opposite positions – Elliott is a 5-foot-9, 165-pou nd kicker and Johnson was a 6-foot-6, 325-pound offensive tackle – Elliott found inspiration in the way Johnson worked and prepared to play at the highest level. “The most impressive thing about Lane for me was just the professionalism and how he took care of his body,” Elliott said after practice Wednesday. “I mean, it’s obviously rare to see someone of that stature and in that shape look like that, be that strong and that locked in all the time.  “So I think just the mental strain he puts on himself every day was impressive, how he showed up to work. I don’t think there was ever a time you walked past him and there’s not some sort of recovery modality going on. So just the way he took care of himself I think taught this whole locker room a lot, just how to be a professional. And obviously one of the guys I respect most that I’ve ever been around.” Johnson was still playing at a high level when he abruptly retired this week, and Elliott is off to a hot start with two field goals of 56 yards or longer, matching his total from 2024 and 2025 combined.  So the 36-year-old Johnson and 31-year-old Elliott were still at the top of their game in their 10th season together. “You learn so much just being around someone like Lane,” Elliott said. “Just how to be a professional and when you’re in the building, how to take advantage of how you can recover and take care of your body. Even when he’s in meetings, like he’s got his toe spacers in or he’s doing some sort of ankle mobility and just kind of all the tinkering with that. I think that’s why he was so good for so long.” The Eagles drafted Johnson in the first round in 2013 and they signed Elliott off the Bengals’ practice squad after Caleb Sturgis suffered a season-ending injury in the 2017 season opener at FedEx Field.  “When I got here and first saw him, I was like, ‘Holy bleep, that’s a dude that shouldn’t have a six pack,’ Elliott said. “So I think just stature wise, seeing him when I showed up, obviously it was kind of a whirlwind when I got here just being introduced to everybody. But seeing him live in person and how he moves and watching him sprint like a wide receiver and just all the intangible stuff was unbelievable.” Elliott and Johnson both had monster years in 2017, Johnson making his first of six Pro Bowls and 1st-team all-pro and Elliott establishing himself as a legit NFL kicker as a rookie with 26-for-31 on field goal attempts and 7-for-7 in the postseason, including 42- and 46-yarders in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis. That made him the first kicker in NFL history to make two field goals of 42 yards or more in the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl, something he repeated seven years later.  Elliott is now 9-for-9 in the Eagles’ three Super Bowls, making him the NFL’s greatest Super Bowl kicker ever.  But as brilliant as Elliott has been in the postseason with 28-for-29 and the Super Bowl, he won’t put himself close to Johnson in importance to those two championship seasons.  “Yeah, I mean, Lane’s probably the best player on the field in both those games,” he said. “In both the totality of those two seasons, I don’t think there’s a better player at a given position in football than Lane. And it wasn’t just how he played, the leadership and how he carries himself went far beyond that as well.” The only Eagles other than Elliott and Johnson to play in both Super Bowl wins were Brandon Graham and Rick Lovato, who are both retired. Dallas Goedert and Jordan Mailata got here in 2018, but Elliott is now the only Eagle left who’s been here since the unforgettable 2017 season. “Last man standing,” he said. “But that’s the nature of the NFL. The roster turnover is unreal. If you looked at every roster, you just won’t find many guys on the same team as 10 years ago. Glad I’m still here.” ...read more read less
