‘Bravo’: CNN Reporter Hits Trump with a Shot of His Own Medicine in Four Words Sure to Hurt His Ego Days After He Gets Rallygoers to Boo Her
Oct 06, 2026
Kaitlan Collins appeared to turn one of President Donald Trump’s favorite insults into a punchline of her own this week. During a recent broadcast, a mug sitting on the CNN anchor’s desk read, “America Needs Nasty Women.”
For now, Collins has offered no public explanation for the mug. But
after months of being told she is too nasty, too unhappy, and unwilling to smile, those four words on her desk have given viewers plenty to talk about.
Without saying Trump’s name or addressing him directly, the anchor appears to have put one of his favorite insults on a coffee mug and brought it to national television. Neither Trump nor Collins has said publicly whether the mug was meant as a response.

The mug appeared during Collins’ Oct. 2 program, when she interviewed filmmaker Alex Gibney about his documentary on Elon Musk, according to HuffPost. Collins later shared a clip of the interview, and viewers noticed the “America Needs Nasty Women” mug sitting on her desk beside a CNN cup. The apparent reference quickly spread online.

The reaction was immediate, with some viewers treating the mug as a particularly fitting answer to Trump’s repeated complaints about Collins.
“Bravo Kaitlin!!!” one exclaimed. Another viewer wrote, “I love this!” with clapping-hands emojis.
Others focused on the fact that Collins embraced the very description Trump has repeatedly thrown at her.
“Kaitlin Collins sporting the ‘America Needs Nasty Women’ mug is top level flex.”
Trump has repeatedly singled out Collins since his return to the White House, often going beyond criticism of her reporting to attack her personally.
Last December, after Collins reported on the rising cost of Trump’s planned White House ballroom, Trump attacked her in a Truth Social post.
“Caitlin Collins of Fake News CNN, always Stupid and Nasty, asked me why the new Ballroom was costing more money than originally thought one year ago,” Trump wrote. “I said because it is going to be double the size, and the quality of finishes and interiors has been brought to the highest level.”
He followed that by attacking CNN itself.
“FAKE NEWS CNN, and the guy who runs the whole corrupt operation that owns it, is one of the worst in the business,” Trump wrote. “Their ratings are so low that they’re not even counted or relevant anymore.MAGA!!!”
Trump’s attacks on Collins have continued even as their encounters have moved beyond the White House.
At the July White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Trump mocked Collins after she received an award for her reporting on his confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“I want to personally congratulate CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on receiving her award,” Trump said. “It was all about me. It’s a fake — she shouldn’t get the award; it was a fake. But I didn’t mind; I said, ‘Kaitlan, congratulations.’ But it was fake; there’s no question about it.”
Trump then returned to a complaint he has made repeatedly about Collins’ appearance and demeanor.
“She’s a young, attractive woman. She never smiles,” Trump said. “I said, ‘Kaitlan, do you ever smile? Smile. You have a nice position; you’re at CNN, fake news; you should be a happy person. So, smile, Kaitlan, just smile.’”
Two months later, the tension followed them to the United Nations.
After Trump barred CNN from White House coverage, Collins encountered him at the U.N. and asked about public skepticism over the Iran war.
“Mr. President, two-thirds of Americans, two-thirds of Americans don’t think the U.S. is winning the war with Iran. When will it end?”
Trump’s response focused not on the question, but on CNN’s presence.
“It’s an honor to be here. I’m surprised CNN is here covering me. You shouldn’t be here. You should not be here covering me,” he said.
Collins answered:
“The United Nations allowed us in, sir.”
Trump continued:
“You should not be here covering me. You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering me.”
Then, at an Ohio rally Saturday, Trump spotted Collins in the crowd and again turned his attention to her, telling supporters to boo the CNN correspondent before saying, “She’s such an unhappy person. She never smiles. She’s a very unhappy person.”The latest episode comes amid a broader fight between the Trump administration and news organizations, including CNN, over White House access. But the Ohio rally also underscored how frequently Trump has made Collins a target.
Trump most recently criticized her in an interview with Time, calling her “a very average person” and “the most unhappy young person I’ve ever seen.”
