A Louisville Metro Police officer shot a 15-year-old boy Monday afternoon while responding to a domestic violence call in Okolona.LMPD Deputy Chief Ryan Bates read a prepared statement to the media at the scene shortly after the incident occurred. Bates said the officer was responding to a “domest
ic trouble call involving a mother injured by her son.” As the officer was interviewing the mom, Bates said the son approached them, armed with a rifle, and fired at them.“The officer was able to get the victim to safety, then ordered the subject to drop the weapon,” Bates said. “The subject fired the weapon and the officer returned fire, striking the subject several times."The incident is the sixth LMPD shooting this year, according to online records. Last year, LMPD officers shot nine people.The 15-year-old boy was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital where he underwent surgery. Police have not released information on his status as of noon Tuesday.Bates stressed that his statement is preliminary and the detail of the incident could change as police learn more about what happened. LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is investigating the shooting while the officer is placed on administrative leave. Police officials have not yet identified the officer.Under LMPD’s policy, body camera footage of the incident should be released within 10 business days.
