(KRON) -- Police arrested two 17-year-old boys after a fight broke out between them and another boy in a bathroom at Ridgeview High School on Thursday.
Police said around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, police responded to reports of a fight on the Ridgeview High School campus. Police said the fight happened
in a bathroom when one of the boys approached the victim and challenged him to a fight, during which another boy joined in the fight against the victim.
School staff was able to help police identify the two suspects, both 17-year-old students, and they said were affiliated with street gangs. Police said the suspects left campus before police got there with one of the suspects apparently making gang-affiliated hand signs while leaving.
"This incident highlights the critical need for a dedicated team of gang crimes detectives who have the knowledge and expertise to comprehensively investigate acts of gang violence in our community," said Santa Rosa Police Chief John Cregan. "Acts of gang violence on our school campuses are a stark reminder of the work that we all have before us."
At about 4 p.m., officers located one of the 17-year-old suspects while in the car with 24-year-old Angelo Avila of Healdsburg. Officers found a "ghost gun" on Avila but determined he was not a suspect in the on-campus fight.
About a half an hour later, police found the second fight suspect and arrested him without incident. Both 17-year-olds were charged with battery causing serious bodily injury, participation in a criminal street gang and criminal street gang enhancement. They were booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall.
Avila was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a concealed firearm within a vehicle. He was booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.
Police said school officials told them of several more challenges to fights on campus following the initial fight. Administrators put the school on temporary lockdown while police officers remained on campus. The lockdown was eventually lifted. No additional incdents were reported.
