SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The NFL slapped San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York with a $500,000 fine Friday for violating the football league's personal conduct policy after York allegedly attempted to pay a prostitute $140 for sex in Ohio.
According to prosecutors, the woman who York believed he was c
ommunicating with through a prostitution website was actually an undercover agent conducting a sting with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.
In addition to the half-a-million dollar fine, the NFL also suspended York for six games. York has not attended any games or league meetings so far this season. He is eligible to return on Oct. 20, following the team's game the previous night against Washington.
York, 46, was arrested in August at a trailer park in East Palestine, Ohio, a police report states. After a brief stint in jail, he pleaded "no contest" to disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools.
The wealthy football team owner and father-of-two had filed for divorce from his wife three months before his arrest, according to Santa Clara County court records.
York sent a statement to ESPN Friday, writing, "Today, the NFL concluded its review, and I accept its decision in full. To my family, to the players, coaches, and employees of the San Francisco 49ers, to our fans and partners, I am deeply sorry. This was an inexcusable mistake and I take full responsibility. What I did does not reflect my values or the man I strive to be for my family. While I fell short of the model I want to set for my sons, I now hope to show them the importance of owning up to one’s failures, and that even our worst moments teach us to be better. Leading the 49ers is a privilege, and one I don’t take lightly."
York grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, about 30 miles away from where he was arrested. Bodycam video shows officers pulling over his SUV and placing the 49ers' owner in handcuffs.
Police asked York, “What are you doing?”
“Just driving,” York replied.
“You meeting anybody?” the officer asked. “No,” York said.
After York was seated inside a cop car, bodycam video shows the officer searching his wallet and finding cash. “He’s a real estate guy. He’s got all the money,” the officer wearing the bodycam is heard saying. “It’s crazy that people that do this. Like they can do whatever they want… It’s wild.”
