(KRON) -- Some Bay Area residents will soon face an extra charge if they stuff too much garbage into their trash bins. Republic Services is notifying customers that beginning November 1, 2026, overfilled black landfill carts will result in a $10 fee per occurrence, according to a notice sent to cu stomers in Contra Costa County. The notice tells residents to make sure their cart lids are completely closed. Republic Services says overfilled carts can affect driver safety, equipment, and neighborhood cleanliness. Customers who regularly have more garbage than their cart can hold are encouraged to request a larger landfill cart or take advantage of recycling, organics, and additional curbside services. KRON4 has reached out to Republic Services to find out how many Bay Area communities will be affected, why the fee is being implemented, and how the company will determine when a cart qualifies as overfilled. KRON4 also asked whether customers will receive a warning before being charged and whether any exemptions will be available. This story will be updated when we hear back. ...read more read less
