RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A local nonprofit is providing Richmond-area students with access to period products. Sylvia's Sisters hosted their first-ever Back to School Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 30, stocking schools with period products, leggings and underwear. Their goal is to prevent students from missing class, staying home or leaving school early because of a lack of period products. Studies show that 1 in 4 girls in the U.S. will miss school due to period poverty, according to the organization's website. "We heard from some of our school representatives that the period products were very valuable, but if a girl had had a menstrual accident and leaked through her clothes, she still had to go home," said Brittany Averatte, executive director of Sylvia's Sisters. "Our founding mission was to keep girls in school, so we were highly motivated to solve that problem."
