Prosecutors have filed charges against an elderly couple accused of fatally shooting their son-in-law at the Dublin Sports Grounds over the weekend.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged 77-year-old couple Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen with murder and other charges in the shooti
ng of their son-in-law, 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey.
The couple had yet to appear before a judge at the East County Hall of Justice as of Wednesday morning.
Court records indicate McKinsey was in the middle of a contentious divorce and custody battle with his wife.
McKinsey claimed in court filings that his wife had a history of physically assaulting him and had allowed her parents to abuse him as well.

McKinsey, who was a transgender man, also alleged that his father-in-law punched him in the chest after he underwent a double mastectomy in 2010. He also claimed his mother-in-law called him a “disgusting queer” and a pervert.
McKinsey’s divorce attorney, Andrea Mah, called the loss of her client a “true tragedy.”
“I trust that our justice system will hold those responsible for Mr. McKinsey’s senseless death accountable,” Mah said in a statement.
Court records also show McKinsey, an tech executive at The New York Times, pleaded not guilty last year to misdemeanor child abuse charges linked to accusations that he slapped one of his children and left another young child alone while he went shopping.
In restraining order documents, McKinsey’s estranged wife alleged that she and her children endured years of physical, verbal and emotional abuse by McKinsey.
In his own request for a restraining order, McKinsey wrote, “I am desperately afraid of what Candice will do to take revenge on me.”
