Prescribed fire planned for Wednesday in San Mateo County canceled

(KRON) -- A one-day prescribed fire planned for Wednesday on the San Mateo County coastside has been canceled. Cal Fire CZU firefighters were previously scheduled to conduct a burn of 247 acres at Pomponio Ranch in San Gregorio, the agency said.
Once the prescribed fire is rescheduled and underway,
the burn at the private property south of Highway 84 and north of Pescadero Creek Road will produce smoke that may be visible in San Gregorio, Pescadero, Half Moon Bay and from Highway 35 in the Santa Cruz Mountains, according to fire officials. Cal Fire said it worked with the Bay Area Air District on a smoke management plan for the fire.
“By reintroducing fire to this landscape under controlled conditions, we are restoring the ecological health of our coastal prairie habitats and encouraging native plants to regenerate. At the same time, we are reducing heavy vegetative fuels,” said Cal Fire CZU Forester and Burn Boss Sarah Collamer. “These burns are situated north of Pescadero to give firefighters a safe, effective location to take a stand and protect the community during a critical north wind event.”

In recent years, firefighters have burned a total of 423 acres at the property, including 230 acres in 2023 and 193 acres in 2024.
No rescheduled date has been set as of Wednesday morning.
