A man pleaded guilty Monday to killing a woman and injuring a child in a January shooting in Paulsboro, New Jersey, according to Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns. On Sept. 28, Ramon L. Acevedo, 41, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degr ee possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in connection with the shooting death of Hazel M. Santiago and the shooting of a child inside a home in January 2026. Prosecutors said that on Jan. 3, 2026, Paulsboro police responded to a 911 call reporting a woman, later identified as Santiago, with a gunshot wound to the head at a home on Elizabeth Avenue. A minor had also been shot but had managed to escape. According to officials, Acevedo identified himself during the call and said he had shot both victims. Acevedo later admitted to shooting Santiago during an ongoing dispute and shooting the minor while handling the firearm in the hallway of the home, prosecutors said. Following his guilty plea, Acevedo is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 17, 2026. Prosecutors said Acevedo faces 30 years to life in prison for first-degree murder, five to 10 years for second-degree aggravated assault and five to 10 years for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. ...read more read less
